Strong and friendly spirited, a beauty of a breed.A Rhodesian Ridgeback is a loyal dog indeed.A ridge of hair runs down its back to set this dog apart. One look at that Rhodesian and I have lost my heart.Resting by my bed at night or sharing play outside.I can#t imagine a life without my Ridgeback by my side”

Below you will find the official information about the breed Rhodesian Ridgeback.

Here are my personal thoughts about my beloved Rhodesian Ridgebacks

If I am asked to describe my Rhodesian Ridgebacks I tend to say that they are very loyal to their family but they are not a Labrador retriever meaning they could care less about strangers. On a regular basis I am asked by people if they could pet my beautiful dogs and my dogs will tolerate it because I gave those people my permission but they really don't care about that attention.Mostly they ignore these people which can be a little disappointing to some .

They are also not born to please you but you rather have to earn their respect in order for them to listen to you.You will not achieve obedience from them through submission like a German Shepard but rather through gentle but assertive leadership.

Undoubtetly your Rhodesian Ridgeback will protect you from any intruder or danger and I have never felt scared when one of my dogs was with me.They are immensely brave.

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is an energetic and athletic breed that needs adequate exercise every day in order to thrive.Having that said my two bitches are probably the calmest Ridgebacks I have ever met and we sometimes call them jokingly the comatous Ridgebacks. I personally enjoy the more mellow personality in my dogs.

Overall Ridgebacks can be a little stubborn but with the right training approach they can become very obedient. They are a more independent breed meaning  that they will explore a new area on there own and tend to cover a larger territory wihout necessarly sticking to your side when on walks. Therefore it is important to teach them a solid recall command and not let them off the leash close to a Highway or unknow places.

This independence also has advantages.Normally, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is not a very nervous or anxious breed.

Very attractive about the Rhodesian Ridgebacks are their physical features. I personally can't believe the beauty and power that I see when my Ridgebacks are playing together or when they look at me in the morning with their royal faces to see if it is breakfast time.In my opinion the Ridgeback has the most facial expressions that I have ever seen in any breed.

They are a proud breed and I always claim that they believe that they are superior towards other dog breeds or at least in charge of other breeds and other dogs which can make a visit at the dog park an adventure.

Last but not least I am very pleased to report that the Rhodesian Ridgeback is an extremely healthy breed compared to some other common breeds like the German Shepard, Labrador Retriever, Golden Retreiver, English Bulldog or Pit bull.

The reason for that is without a doubt that responsible Rhodesian Ridgeback breeders are usually very diligent with what dogs they are breeding and several health tests are required by the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of the United States.

These health tests can be viewed on http://www.offa.org for each individual breeding dog.

Another reason is that responsible RR breeder will decide very carefully where they are placing a puppy and will turn down any buyer they feel like is not a good fit for this breed.

Breeding these formidable and extraordinary dogs is not about financial gain (for me at least), it is about conserving and improving an admirable and unique breed, one puppy at a time.
